Abstract

This study aims 1) to find out the challenges encountered by English teachers in applying the PjBL teaching methods suggested by K-13 during the pandemic Covid-19, 2) to reveal the hindering factors to meet those challenges, and 3) to explain how teachers coped with those factors. This research employed a qualitative research method. Data were collected through class observation and in-depth interviews with 6 English teachers in SMPN 2 Mataram. The result of this study shows the implementation of PjBL during the COVID-19 pandemic faces some challenges. All of them can be categorized briefly as challenges related to teachers, students, school, and parents. While the hindering factors of those challenges are: 1) the physical distancing regulation; 2) the limitation of face-to-face meetings; 3) the lack of teacher competence; 4) the lack of learning facilities. To meet the challenges, teachers can make strategies for coping with the challenges by 1) using the flipped classroom; 2) applying the ICT Provided by School; 3) teachers’ Group discussion through MGMP (Forum Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran); 4) mentoring and communication among teachers and parents.
