Abstract

This study aimed to find and analyze the types of Adjacency Pairs and their preference structure used by a teacher and students in speaking class at CEC Kampoeng Pare Mataram. This study adopted a descriptive research method to analyze the data. This study’s samples included a teacher and students of (2nd Level) speaking class at CEC Kampoeng Pare Mataram. The data was collected using video recording and afterward it was transcribed to be analyzed. The study showed there were eleven types of adjacency pairs and seven of their preference structure discovered in teaching learning process. Question – answer which its preference structure was expected as preferred response and unexpected as dispreferred one. Request – acceptance/rejection which acceptance as preferred and rejection as dispreferred response of its preference structure. Apology – acceptance/refusal, both preferred and dispreferred occurred as preference structure in this type. Then, complaint – apology/denial. Its preference structure was preferred and dispreferred. Furthermore, invitation – acceptance, its acceptance response was known as preferred response in preference structure. Suggestion – disagreement and offer – rejection, each of this pair had its preference structure in formed of dispreferred. However, announcement – acknowledgment, greeting – greeting, summon – answer and closing – closing which types of adjacency pairs also existed in this study, yet their preference structure did not exist.
