Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate students' writing on descriptive text especially in student’s ability, difficulties and the factors causing their difficulties in writing descriptive text. This research used theory by Heaton (1988) and a writing rubric to analyse students' writing of descriptive texts. There were five aspects, such as content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. The subject of this research was tenth grade, which consists of 36 students from X MIPA1 of SMAN 1 Dompu academic year 2021–2022. The technique of analyzing data was applied by using mixed method. The data were taken from the test and questionnaire. The test was about a certain topic, which was "my idol." The questionnaire consisted of 15 questions. There were eleven statements using the Likert Scale and four open-ended questions. The result of analyzing the data showed that: 1) 77.7% of the students were categorized as excellent level, and 22.3% of students were categorized as good level; with the mean score were 88.31; 2) there were two difficulties the students still faced, such as language use, especially in using the present tense, and mechanics. 3) It also found that the factors causing students' difficulties in writing descriptive text consist of four factors.
