Abstract

This study focuses on observing teachers’ use of local culture-based text materials and the students’ respond to the local culture-based text materials in English language classroom in one of government senior high school in Narmada. The theoretical framework used in this study followed the criteria of suitable instructional materials proposed by Tomlinson (1998:7-21). This study used a qualitative ethnographic study, and the ethnographic study being used is classroom ethnography. The data were taken through classroom observation, interview, document analysis and note-taking. The findings show that the types of local culture�based text materials used by the teachers in this school are: nationally-local, provincially-local and locally-local culture-based text materials while how the teachers’ use local culture-based text materials in the classroom different in frequency and materials development and preparation. In addition, the local culture�based text materials in the classroom used by the teachers are for reading activity, lead-in, simplifying difficult foreign context and speaking. Moreover, the students show positive respond to the use of local culture-based text materials in the classroom. Based on those findings, teachers’ use of local culture -based text materials in this government high school align to the theory proposed by Tomlinson (1998:7-21).
