Abstract

This study aims: 1) to measure the correlation between self-directed learning levels and argumentative writing performances in EFL classes, and 2) to describe in what aspect did self-directed learning levels correlate to students’ argumentative writing performances in EFL classes. The method used in this study is ex-post facto research. The participants in this study were 26 students from the argumentative writing classes in English Education Program at University of Mataram. To collect the data, the researcher distrubuted a questionnaire and administration test. The researcher analyzed the data using SPSS 25.0. The findings of this study indicate that most of the students experienced high level of self-directed learning and argumentative writing performance in percentage of 38.5%, followed by 61.5% of moderate one. The correlation between both variable was statistically significant at the .01 level. The value of Pearson coefficient was .885 which indicates very strong correlation between self-directed learning levels and students’ argumentative writing performance. Hence, the Null Hypothesis (Ho) is refused and the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted because the significant score is ≥ (more than) α, it is mean that there is significant correlation among two variables that is self-directed learning level and argumentative writing performance in EFL classes.
