Abstract

This study entitled “Students’ Perception of lecturers’ Favorable Characteristics in the English Department of FKIP Mataram University in Academic Year 2015/ 2016”. This study was aimed to reveal students’ perception of lecturers’ favorable characteristics. The subjects of this study were sixty (60) students on 5th, 7th, and 9th semesters in the English Department of FKIP Mataram University. The instruments used were questionnaire and interview. In questionnaire, the researcher used close and open ended questions to obtain information about students’ perception of lecturers’ favorable characteristics which consisted of twenty- seventh of close questions and one of open question. In close ended question, fourth categories of lecturers’ characteristics were used i.e. lecturers’ personality, readiness, teaching process, and assessment were isolated as variable to be responded by respondents using 5 likert- scale. In open ended question, one question used to obtain information about other characteristics that students expected from their lecturer which do not mention in close ended question. Interview was used to obtain additional characteristics of lecturer and further information to complete the data. Then, the data were tabulated and analyze qualitatively. Based on the findings or significant percentages, it was found lecturers’ favorable characteristics were good mastery of knowledge, fairness, creativity, explains material clearly, appreciates students, and attends class based on teaching schedule. From those lists of lecturers’ favorable characteristics, the most important characteristics were lecturers’ good mastery of knowledge (95%) and fairness (85%), and the least important characteristics of favorable lecturers were lecturer’s sense of humor (30%), uses relevant real world example (25%), designing appropriate assignment for his/ her classes (25%), understanding toward students (15%), and lecturer shares professional experience (10%).
