Abstract

This study falls into sociolinguistics which particularly touches the language policy in order to see ideology, management and practice of noble families in maintaining their language. The purpose of this study is three folded i.e. to map out the vocabulary use, to find out how the noble families maintain the language as well as to uncover the ideologies why the families still maintain the use of refined language (Sasak Alus). In order to collect the data, several procedures were carried out interviews, observations, and documentation. Data were analysed based on the work of Miles and Huberman where initially data were collected through observation and interviews and the second was data reduction used to convert all the gathered data from document, interview and observation into readable and understood such as classifying which data fall into resarach questions, the last was display and conlusion where they were used to present into more precise and concise screen. The results show that the total number of Base alus vocabularies that were used during daily conversation was 160 vocabularies ranging from noun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction and pronoun. Among them, the verbs were the most common parts of speech used, it about 40% i.e. 65 words, the second was noun which received 33.75% about 54 words, while others were adjective and adverb which received 9.4% each and the rests below 5 % each. With regard to the way or langauge management that families used to maintain their noble language, it was found that most of the families employed implicit strategies in which dominant respondents about 38.5% claimed to pass on the language by mixing the language (Sasak and Indonesian) while some around 24% believed to descend by selecting peer for their kids, the rests were selecting place to stay and correcting language use received 15 % each in terms of ideologies, 50% of the families believed to pass on the language because they wanted to maintain the herited language, however 30 % claimed to pass on the language for the purpose of acquiring social status, while some families thought to have cacpital language as well as family’s tradition which received 10% each of ideologies. In other words, the results showed that the use of Base alus in noble families (nuclear families) and extended families of nobles of Kotaraja village is still quite well maintained
