Abstract

Speaking is one of the most important skills that needs to be taught at junior high school level. However, some preliminary studies showed that most of the students had had difficulties in mastering English in terms of the oral competence due to several factors such as lack of self-confidence, lack of practice, and lack of motivation in speaking English. Scripted role play method for speaking activities is a good alternative that can be used to engage students to actively speak in the teaching-learning process during speaking activities. The present study aims at investigating how scripted role plays help students develop their interactional speaking skill. It also aims at finding out the students‟ responses towards using scripted role play technique in learning speaking. This class action research used cyclical process that consisted of 2 cycles, each cycle consists of 4 phases; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. To collect data, pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire methods were implemented. The results show that scripted role play technique helps students develop their interactional speaking activities in the classroom. It is proven by the data that was derived from this study. First, from the tests result which consists of three tests, those were: pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test 2. There were 81.25% students had passed the KKM (70) of speaking score; 31.25% were obtained from the cycle 1, and 50% were obtained from the cycle 2. Second, from the questionnaire result; 87.5% students had positive opinions through the application of scripted role play. Based on the result, there were 13 of 16 students passed the KKM and they had very good responses about scripted role play technique. Thus, the researcher concluded that this current action research is successful.
