Abstract

Language is the human ability to communicate with other humans using signs such as words and gestures. In addition, language also functions as a means of self-expression where humans can freely express ideas, thoughts, and feelings through language. One way of communicating is by speaking. In Indonesia, students study English at different levels. Although the students are taught at different levels, many of them still find difficult to learn English. This study discuss the factors that contribute to the speaking problems faced by students. The purpose of this research is to find out and explain what factors contribute to the speaking problems faced by students. in this study used quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze the data. To collect data questionnaires and interviews were conducted. The research data were collected from twenty students from the English Department. The result of this study is that students have problems in learning to speak English because of the factors that contribute to speaking performance. it is evident from the data that shows the highest score of the factors that contribute to speaking problems is the fear of making mistakes where 30% of students are always afraid to make mistakes. while external factors showed that 35% of students said the lecturer corrected students in an inappropriate way. This makes students face some difficulties in speaking.
