Abstract

Self-directed learning (SDL) has proven to be highly effective in assisting learners in resolving problems and transforming challenges into learning opportunities. As a result, there will be an urgent need to seek out and acquire better learning opportunities that emphasize SDL as a means of improving the learner experience at the university. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a significant correlation between EFL learners’ SDL level and their learning opportunities or not. A quantitative study utilizing ex post facto research design, at the University of Mataram with fourth-semester English learners as samples, revealed that most of the learners achieved the same “moderate” level in both variables—SDL and learning opportunities. Data collected using SRSSDL (Self-Rating Scale of Self-Directed Learning) and SDLOI (Self-Directed Learning Opportunity Instrument) showed a Pearson’s r score of .465 with a two-tailed significance value less than .05. This indicated that the level of SDL and learning opportunities are moderately correlated variables.
