Abstract

ABSTRACT. This research aims to describe the metacognitive ability of students in solving mathematical problems in statistical subject for junior high school in Mataram based on the level of metacognition of students. This research includes descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The population in this study were all class students which had 11 classes in total. The sampling technique used is the purposive sampling technique. A total of 33 students took the metacognitive ability test, but only 2 samples of students were taken at each level of metacognition ability. However, there is one student who is in the category of tacit use and reflective use so the number of samples in this study is 8 people. Data collection techniques in this study were tests, documentation, and interviews. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the metacognitive abilities of students at each level were different. The tacit use level shows that students can only know some important information and can estimate the level of difficulty of the questions. Aware use level shows that students can find out important information about the problem, cannot understand the problem, have not been able to plan strategies, and are not aware of mistakes. The semi-strategic use level shows students re-checking, experiencing doubts about the results obtained, and being aware of mistakes but not knowing how to fix errors. The strategic use level shows students are aware of self-regulation in their thinking processes by selecting strategies or special skills to solve problems that can be solved to improve their thought processes. The level of reflective use shows that students have self-reflection in their thought processes before and after or even during the process by considering the continuation and improvement of the results of their thoughts.
