Abstract

The ability to communicate well in different languages, particularly in English as an international language, is crucial for tourism practitioners in Sade Village since they mostly use oral/spoken language for explaining and promoting cultures and traditions of the village to the tourists from various countries. This study aimed at finding out authentic tasks and texts of the tourism practitioners in Sade Village for designing English syllabus using Standpoint Model. This study used research and development (R&D) design with Standpoint Model as the methodological procedures. The subjects of this study were 12 tourism practitioners such as a leader of Tourism Awareness Group, 9 tour guides, a seller, and a weaver. The data were collected by using observation, interview, focus group discussion (FGD), and documentation. Then, the data findings were analyzed by using data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing/verification, and syllabus design. The result of the study presented that there are 13 standpoints where the tourism practitioners commonly stand to perform their authentic tasks and texts. The findings also presented that (1) the authentic tasks of tourism practitioners in Sade Village are commonly about explaining the objects, histories, cultures, and traditions in Sade Village and (2) the authentic texts of the tourism practitioners are the information about the origin, the history, the function of the standpoints, the kinds of traditions and cultures in Sade Village, and the process for making yarn and hand weaving. These authentic data are used as the basis for designing an English syllabus for Tourism Practitioners in Sade Village.
