Abstract

The increasing number of foreign visitors in Nusa Tenggara Barat province especially in tourism sector has raised the awareness of the needs of English learning for tourism practitioners. The use of English for tourism practitioners is significant to ensure quality and need performance standard. This study aimed to design English syllabus through needs analysis process based on Standpoint Model. This study used qualitative descriptive method which involved 15 tourism practitioners such as tour guides, porters, tracking organizers, and officer at Gunung Rinjani National Park, Sembalun East Lombok. This study focused on finding the needs of tourism practitioners based on needs as necessities and designing the English syllabus. The data collection procedures were carried out through observation, interview and documentary. Moreover, the data analysis were analyzed by data coding, data display, drawing and verification conclusion method. The result of this study showed that in general, the standpoints consisted of 15 locations that described the authentic tasks and authentic texts in each standpoint. In developing the English syllabus design, the IQF Certification Schema Referencing to AQFR, ACCSTP, and CATC on Tourism Professional Area of Travel Agencies document was used as guidelines to support the English syllabus design which focused on English communicative functions. Furthermore, the expert judgments were used to improve the English syllabus design based on Standpoint Model.
