Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study focuses on the description of the English sibilant sounds pronounced by students at Nurul Hakim Lombok Islamic Boarding School. The participants of this study were 9 participants from three different tribes, Sumbawanese, Bimanese, and Sasaknese, who possess the typical phonological errors in English sibilant sounds. This study provided the descriptions of the sibilant sounds incorrectly pronounced by the participants, which were done by comparing the participants' actual sound productions and the standard phonological sounds. For this purpose, the researcher used the Google pronunciation machine as the reference to find those phonological deviations in the data and classified them according to their categories. The objectives of this study were to discover the phonological errors committed by participants, to find out the patterns of the phonological errors, and to examine the phonological processes behind the phonological phenomenon in Nurul Hakim Lombok Islamic Boarding School. There were 403 incorrectly misordering the words as 22.4% in percentages, and there were omissions that occurred in 6.75%. The last is the additions occurred in just 4.8%. The participants were difficult to pronounce the sound /ž/ changed with /j/, sound /v/ changed with /f/, and sound /θ/ changed with /th/. In this case, participants need to get taught and learn the pronunciation in the exact way to get to a good level in learning English articulation. It is recommended that teachers take an in-depth look at the learners’ problems in pronouncing English.
