Abstract

Abu Hurairah Islamic Boarding School students are classified as bilingual because they can speak and understand more than one language: Indonesian, Arabic and English. In their daily communications, the students tend to switch one code into another code to simplify the way they interact with others. However, they frequently use Indonesian-Arabic code switching in single discourse to show their identity. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the types of code switching, reasons on using code switching and how Indonesian-Arabic code switching construct their religious identity. This study was designed in qualitative method which emphasizes on describing the data systematically and more detail in natural setting. Moreover, to gain the data needed, the researcher used three methods: observation, recording and interview. The data analysis on this study proved that the students used many types of code switching: tag switching, intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching, situational switching and metaphorical switching. In addition, the students used code switching for some reasons: talking about particular topic, being emphatic about something, interjection and expressing identity. Finally, there were some Arabic expressions which were commonly used by the students to construct their Islamic identity such as: jazakAllahu khaeron, inshaAllah, subhanAllah, alhamduillah and syafakAllah.
