Abstract

This research aims to discover the types of politeness strategies and the factors of politeness strategies employed in the Sasak language used by the students at SMPN 1 Sakra. The research employs qualitative descriptive to investigate the kinds of politeness strategies and to describe the factors of politeness strategies that influence the students to speak the Sasak language politeness. The data source of research deals with students at SMPN 1 Sakra who consist of menak (nobilities) and jajar karang or bulu kentujur (common). The findings data discover the use of politeness strategies which are applied among the students‟ menak (nobilities), jajar karang or bulu kentujur (common) namely bald on record and positive politeness strategies. The total politeness was 16 strategies consist of disagreement, advice, request, warning, and imperative form, exaggerate, interest to hear, group identity marker, seek agreement, avoid disagreement, presuppose, joke, assert, promise, optimistic, the speaker and listener, ask for a reason, assume, sympathy. The most frequent strategy is positive politeness because speakers prefer to avoid offending interlocutors when speaking. Besides, this research also finds the factors of politeness that nobilities (menak) speak politeness based on the factors of age, gender, status social, and family. Meanwhile, commoners (jajar karang or bulu kentujur) prefer speak politeness based on the factors of age, gender, and family. Nobilities (menak) and commoners (jajar karang or bulu kentujur) prefer the family as one of the factors which influence society speaks the Sasak language of politeness used to other factors. This result of findings approves that the mother tongue derives from the family in which the parents have a role to establish the children spoke politeness
