Abstract

This study was aimed to analyze the students’ ability and difficulties in using adverbial clause in writing complex sentences. The study was conducted in the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), University of Mataram. There were 130 English students in the fifth semester divided into six classes as population. From the population of this study it was taken one class (A class of Reguler) consisting of 20 students was selected as the sample of the study by cluster random sampling technique by using Matching Test type of 20 items were used to find out the students’ ability and difficulties in using adverbial clause in writing complex sentences. It was found that the students’ ability in using four adverbial clauses are: adverbial clause of time (22.91%), caluse of cause and effect (21.66%), caluse of contrast (25.83%), and clause of condition (29.60%). Adverbial clause of condition (29.60%) was the highest score percentage for the students’ ability, and the lowest percentage was in the adverbial clause of cause and effect (21.66%). However, the students had difficulties in diction of conjuntion (57%), ceherency between independent and dependent clauses (30%), and the position of the subordinate conjuntion (13%). The students’ made errors in the four types of adverbial clause: adverbial clause of time (28.12%), clause of cause and effect (30%), clause of contrast (23.75%), and clause of condition (18.12%). Among them, adverbial clause of cause and effect was the dominan error (30%) and the lowest error was the adverbial clause condition (18.12%).
