Abstract

MUHAMMAD IRWAN HASBY E1D110057 ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to show the effectiveness of context clues towards students` vocabulary mastery of eight grades students of SMPN 9 Mataram. There were 295 students as the population in this research and from those population, 68 students were selected as sample. Then, they were divided into two groups: experimental and control group, in which each group consisted of 34 students. The sample were selected through cluster random sampling technique. The researcher used pretest and posttest to collect the data. The aim of the pretest is to know students` level vocabulary mastery. Context clue was applied as treatment. But context clue is used to treat experimental group only, while control group were treated by using open dictionary only. And then posttest was aimed to know the effect of context clue and dictionary. Then, the procedure of this research is continued with calculating the mean and deviation score for both groups and calculating all process calculation by using t-test. The finding of this research showed score of t-testis 3.95 wich is higher than t-table 1.99 at the confidence level of .05 (95%) and 2.65 of .01 (99%). From the result comparison of t-test with t-table, Ha failed to be rejected and Ho failed to be accepted. So, the result answer research question is context clue affective to teach vocabulary in eight grade students of SMPN 9 Mataram academic year 2015/2016” is effective.
