Abstract

Due to the increasing amount of solid waste, especially those resulting from building damage due to the Lombok earthquake in 2018, then recycle roof tile waste material as an alternative to sand in mortar is proposed. This research aims to determine physical and mechanical properties of mortar made of rooftile waste as partial ingredient in mortar composition. Parameters considered in this study were variations of rooftile used as a partial substitute for sand by weight of 15%, 25%, 35%, and 50%. The specimen used is in the form of a cube with dimensions of 5cm x 5cm x 5cm with a testing age of 28 days. Four types of testing were considered namely compressive strength, tensile strength, water absorption and mortar density test. Results showed that the unit weight of sand in both loose and solid conditions is greater than the unit weight of the rooftile. Whilst water absorption of rooftile of 26.8%, higher than that of sand of 6%. Compressive strength of all rooftile mortar variations greater than the control mortar of 13.067. The tensile strength of mortar generally decreases with increasing percentage of sand replacement with rooftiles. The ratio of tensile strength to compressive strength varies from 1.61% to 2.49% which is smaller than the ratio of control mortar of 3.9%. The average water absorption for mortar with rooftile is 8.3% while the maximum water absorption of 9.4% is obtained at 50% sand replacement. A 35% rooftile composition as a substitute for sand is recommended with a water absorption of 7.7% and this rooftile almost falls into the category of Type M mortar which can be used for structural concrete purposes. Finally, it can be concluded that rooftile waste has the potential to be used as a substitute for sand in mortar mixtures.
