Abstract

This study aims to determine, i.e. (1) the interaction patterns of teachers and students in online English learning (2) the challenges of the teachers and students in online English Learning. The study was conducted at MAN 1 Mataram, which also affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and participated in implementing online learning. This study used statement of Angelo (1993) who classified classrom interaction patterns into two types, they are teacher-student interactions and student-student interaction. Qualitative descriptive is used as the research approach in presenting data. This research used observation and followed by semi-structured interviews to collect the data, with 5 students of grade X and 1 English teacher at MAN 1 Mataram as the sample. The result of this study indicates that interaction patterns in online English Learning classes is teacher-students interaction. In online English classes, the researcher identified both of teacher and students face challenges such as difficulty in understanding the material, limited quota, feeling lazy and being undisciplined during the study.
