Abstract

This study is intended to analyze and describe the ways as well as the most dominant types of theme and rheme are established in political editorials of The Jakarta Post and Jakarta Globe. This is done by examining the Thematic Structure of the clauses in the editorials on the basis of the theories of the Systemic Functional Grammar developed by Halliday (1985) and Halliday and Matthiessen (2014). The results shows that the ways theme and rheme are established in political editorial in The Jakarta Post are simple theme (55.05%), multiple theme 38 (42.70%), and multiple theme in reported clauses (2.25%), while in Jakarta Globe it is found that the ways are simple theme (58.14%) and multiple theme (41.86). Meanwhile the total number of themes in the editorials of The Jakarta Post is 131 themes, with the number of the topical unmarked themes is 78 themes (59.54%), topical marked is 14 (10.69%) themes, textual themes is 37 (28.24%) themes, and interpersonal themes is 2 (1.53%) themes. While in political of Jakarta Globe, the total number of the themes is 65 themes, with the number of topical unmarked themes is 38 (58.46%) themes, topical marked themes is 7 (10.77%) themes, textual themes is 18 (27.70%) themes, and interpersonal themes is 2 (3.07%) themes. These findings suggest that the political editorials in Jakarta Globe is easier to be understood rather than The Jakarta Post since the percentage of the simple and unmarked topical theme in Jakarta Globe is higher than The Jakarta Post. Whereas in The Jakarta Post in which the percentage of textual theme is higher than in Jakarta Globe seems to persuade readers’ opinion by using some contrastive textual theme to strengthen their arguments in their editorials.
