Abstract

This thesis entitled “A Pragmatic Analysis of Expressive Speech Acts Used by The Main Character in “Despicable Me 1” Movie Script. The aim of this research is to identify, classification, describe and analyze the types of expressive speech acts used by the Main characters. This research applied the theory of expressive speech acts by Searle (1976). This research used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data, this research used movie script of Despicable Me 1 as source of the data. Thus, the data were described in the form of words, phrase and sentences. The data collecting method is used documentation. The results findings of this research is the researcher found the there are 30 utterances it contains expressive speech acts used by the Main character in movie script, they are: Expressive of thanking 2 data with percentage (6.6%), expressive of apologize 7 data with percentage (23.3%), expressive of greeting 4 data with percentage (13.3%), expressive of congratulation 0 data, expressive of wishing 3 data with percentage (10%), expressive of praising 6 data with percentage (20%), and expressive of attitude 8 data with percentage (26.6%). From 30 utterances containing expressive speech acts, the most dominant type of expressive speech act found in this study using the Despicable Me 1 movie script is expressive of attitude there are 8 data with a percentage (26.6%). So, the main characters in this movie often show an expressive of attitude when he communicate towards the listeners
