Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out students’ ability in using punctuations and capital letters in narrative text. This study was conducted to the sixth semester students of English Depatement of Mataram Universty. This research applied descriptive qualitative method by taking 37 students as the sample. This research used test and questionnaire as the instrument. From the analysis the result shows that no students or 0% was categorized into ‘excellent’, ‘good’, or ‘fair’ in using punctuation and capital letter in narrative text, two students or 5% were categorized into ‘low’, 35 students or 95% were categorized into ‘failed’. Errors most frequently made by the students were ‘dash’ and ‘colon’ that reach 100%, followed by ‘exclamation’ mark that reach 92%, after that there is ‘comma’ that reach 88%, ‘question mark’ 87%, ‘aphostrophe’ 84%, ‘capital letter’ 66%, ‘quotation mark’ 65%, and the last is ‘full stop’ that reach 59%. Students experiecnced difficulty in using punctuation because they did not understand punctuation specifically. Some students were confused when to use several types of punctuation and consequently didn’t know which punctuation used and which capitalized, some other students did not even know how to use punctuation. Another reason was that they were not have adequate knowledge of several words, which make them confused. It can be concluded that students ability in using punctuation and capital letters falls to ‘failed’.
