Abstract

The purposes of this research were to find out the effects of mind mapping in improving students’ ability in writing descriptive text at Cake English Course Mataram and to describe the implementation of mind mapping in improving students’ ability in writing descriptive text at Cake English Course Mataram. This research used mixed methods (both qualitative and quantitative). The researcher took the second step students of Kampung Inggris Pare Mataram, academic year 2021/2022 consisted of 30 students as the sample in this research. The researcher used observation, questionnaires, and interviews as the instruments. The results of this research show that the effects of mind mapping in improving students’ ability in writing descriptive text are motivating students’ writing, helping students to organize the ideas, reducing students’ difficulties in writing and promoting students’ creativity in writing. Students admitted that mind mapping can inspire them to write because some of them use concepts outside of class writing paragraphs. They can reduce writing challenges by using mind mapping to help them organize their ideas. Students acknowledged that using mind maps made writing simpler. Last but not least, using mind map can help writers be more creative with the words they choose to use. The implementation of mind mapping in improving students’ ability in writing descriptive text was consisted of selecting a topic, writing a related topic, writing ideas to back up those ideas, writing sentences to back up those sentences, and writing a paragraph.
