Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the students‟ speaking anxiety faced by the students at class X1 of SMKN 1 Praya Barat. This study is qualitative method. The researcher chose X1 UPW class which consisted of 23 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaire and observation. The researcher used three major phases of the data analysis, they were: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing verification. From data analysis, the researcher found some conclusion of students‟ speaking anxieties at class XI UPW of SMKN 1 Praya Barat as follows: First, the factor that caused students‟ anxieties in speaking English based on the result of questionnaire is lack confidence, low English proficiency, lack of preparation, shy and nervous, fear of making mistakes and afraid of being the center of attention. While the strategies they used to overcome anxieties are preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, peer seeking and resignation. Second, the factors that caused students‟ anxieties in speaking English based on the result of observation are lack of confidence, low English proficiency, lack of preparation, shy, nervous, fear of making mistakes and hate being the center of attention.
