Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the utterances of Hua Mulan or Hua Jun as the woman main character of Mulan movie by classifying the kinds of the language features used and describing the function of each language feature based on Lakoff’s Sociolinguistics perspective which is known as Women’s Language Features theory. The sources of the data in this research were the scene and the dialogue of Mulan movie. The data collected by using documentary method and analyzed by using content analysis method based on Lakoff’s theory of women’s language features (1975) which consist of hypercorrect grammar, superpolite form, avoidance of strong swear words, lexical hedges or fillers, tag questions, rising intonation on declaratives, empty adjectives, intensifiers, emphatic stress, and precise color terms. The result of this study showed that there were seven kinds of women’s language features found in the utterances of Hua Mulan or Hua Jun. Those language features were hypercorrect grammar, superpolite forms, lexical hedges or fillers, rising intonation on declaratives, empty adjectives, intensifiers, and emphatic stress. Avoidance of strong swear, tag question, and precise color terms were not found in the utterances of Hua Mulan. The function of each language feature used by the woman main character of Mulan movie was as the politeness devices, to express uncertainty, and as the way to express emotional reaction or strong feeling.
