Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the main factors of anxiety experienced by students in public speaking and how students overcome their anxiety. This study was conducted at SMAN 1 Keruak Lombok Timur from 17 May to 30 June 2022. The design of this study was a qualitative study. All 32 students of Natural Science Program 1 participated to answer the questionnaire. The questionnaire used in the form of a Likert scale adopted from Horwitz and developed with suggestions from the validator. In order to have more understanding of the students' speaking questions, some students were selected as the interviewed subjects according to their scores. In this study, questionnaire sheets, interview guides, and class observation sheets were applied as instruments. In analyzing the data, the researcher used an interactive data analysis model proposed by Miles M.B and Huberman A.M. The results of this study are; (1) This study indicates that there are three biggest factors that influence the students speaking anxiety in this study. First is lack self-confidence, gender differences, and afraid to get a negative response. 2) There are several strategies they to overcome speaking anxiety. Some students reported that Psychological strategies were what they used to relieve their anxiety. First is by pray, focus on the material, and read bismillah to calm their hearts, and for Behavioral Strategy is prepare the material, get organize, and knowing the topic, and for Physical Strategy, is Taking with their friends, looking around, and Breath deeply.
