Abstract

This thesis entitled “The Effectiveness of Using Group Discussion on Students’ Speaking Skill”. The object of study was in the second grade students at SMPN 1 Masbagik. The kind of this research is Experimental Research. The procedure to collect the data consists of pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The population of this research was the second grade students of SMPN 1 Masbagik where every student has the same level in speaking skill. This research used purposive random sampling technique to decide the sample. The samples were two groups namely the experimental group (XD) and the control group (XC). The experiment group was taught by Inquiry Technique while Control Group was taught by Grammar Translation Method Both group experimental and control consisted of 30 students. In experimental group was found post-test score higher than pre-test score. From pre-test 15 students got higher than mean score in pre- test 38.7 but after giving treatment using the Group Discussion technique the result from experimental group in post-test 28 students have a score higher than mean score in the post test (46.73). At the end of the test acquired the data after calculating using t-test and it was required 3.19. The t-test result was acquired higher than the t-table at confident level 0.05 (2.021) and 0.01 (2.704) from degree of freedom 58. In conclusion, the null hypothesis that "Group Discussion technique does not increase students' speaking skill" was rejected but the hypothesis alternate that "Group Discussion technique increase students' speaking skill" was accepted.
