Abstract

In teaching learning process, textbook is usually used as the main material resources. The difficulty in comprehending a textbook can be caused by many factors such as the level of lexical density and readability of the textbook itself. The purpose of this study is to (1) identify the level of lexical density, and (2) readability off the English textbook "When English Rings A [The] Bell" especially for 8th grade. The analysis is based on Halliday (1985) and Ure (1971) theory of lexical density. Meanwhile for readability, the analysis is based on Flesch Reading Ease. The sample of this study was taken from the English textbook "When English Rings A [The] Bell" consisting of 13 chapters. From the analysis, it was found that the level of lexical density is easy level of an English textbook. This study also found that, the level of readability of the English textbook is easy level. In conclusion, the English textbook has a low level of lexical density so that level of readability is high
