Abstract

This study deals with the analysis of students' difficulties in writing procedure texts and the factors that affect the difficulties. This research is descriptive- qualitative. The population in this study was all second-grade students of SMKN 1 Mataram and one class was chosen as the sample using random sampling. The data in this study were collected through a worksheet/written task to determine the students' abilities and difficulties when writing procedure texts. The research also applied a questionnaire to support the data on the results of the written task and to find out what factors influence students in writing procedure texts. The results of the assessment showed that students had difficulties in the content aspect (17%), in the organization aspect (24%), in the vocabulary aspect (24%), in the grammar aspect (17%), and in the mechanic aspects (34%). There were some factors that contribute to the students' difficulties in writing procedure text. The results of the questionnaire showed that students had low motivation to learn English, most students did not master basic things in writing English texts, most students also did not practice to improve their writing skills, and lack of time. In the end, students had dominant difficulties in the mechanic aspect when making procedure texts and the dominant factor that affected students was the nature of writing
