Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the public speaking ability of students in public speaking classes based on language problems such as fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. In addition, this study also discusses the perceptions of teachers and students regarding language problems faced in public speaking classes. This study used observation and semi-structured interviews to collect data. Observations were used to analyze what language problems the students found through public speaking classes using the IELTS band descriptor as the basis for analysis. Meanwhile, interviews were conducted with several students to obtain unclear information about observations and to analyze student and teacher perceptions of language problems in public speaking classes. The data of this study were analyzed using the thematic analysis framework proposed by Creswell (2012). These findings confirm that the public speaking competence of the sixth semester students of the FKIP UNRAM English education program out of six students were only one participant who has below the average ability with a percentage of 45%. Two of the six students with the highest scores were in the percentages of 80% and 90%. Problems that are often found to be the cause of their lack of public speaking performances are due to stage fright or anxiety, lack of confidence, lack of vocabulary, lack of time management and difficulty in elaborating their ideas. So far, based on the results of the study, it shows that the perceptions of students and teachers about public speaking classes at FKIP UNRAM are quite successful and satisfying in improving students' speaking skills, enthusiasm, learning new knowledge, increasing self-confidence, expert lecturer on their fields of study
