Abstract

This research explores the strategies and challenges faced by teacher when teaching English vocabulary to young learners. The purposes of this study were to describe the strategies and challenges that the English for Young Learners (EYL) teachers used in teaching vocabulary in English as a local content subject. A descriptive qualitative method was used. Observation, interview, study document and artefact collection were used to collect the data. To analyze the data, data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing were used in this research. The strategies found in this research are (1) listen and repeat, (2) question and answer, (3) translation, (4) modeling and demonstration, (5) see differences, (6) brainstorming, and (7) outdoor activity. Meanwhile, the challenges faced by EYL teacher are divided into 2 parts, the general challenges faced by English teachers when teaching English vocabulary are (1) some students forget to bring the textbook, (2) student are whiny and timid, (3) they like to play, (4) teacher must be patient (5) teacher must be as a friend or parent for his/her students, (6) unite students’ characteristic, (7) inappropriate textbook, (8) lack of infrastructure, and (9) short duration for teaching and learning process. Meanwhile, the challenges faced by English teachers when teaching vocabulary using some strategies are (1) some students cannot write, (2) students mood influence the learning process, (3) understand students who are considered capable and lacking in English, and (4) different class condition and media in the classroom.
