Abstract

Teachers‟ assessment in EYL classrooms is essential since for the past two decades, teaching English to young learners has become a global phenomenon. This happens also in Indonesia where many primary schools offer English as one of the subjects to be taught, despite the fact that, as of the 2013 curriculum, English is no longer a compulsory subject as it can only be taught as an extracurricular activity. Since there is no specific curriculum for teaching English to young learners as a guidance for teachers, it can be assumed that the teachers lack of competence in how they assess learning. This study aims to investigate the types of assessments enacted by the EYL teachers, the assessment strategies that uses, and the objectivity that the teachers obtained in their assessment. The research design of the study is a case study. The data were collected through 11 classroom observations, four time interviews with 2 English teachers and analysis of students‟ work and assessment records as documents. The results of the study, First, there are 3 types of assessments enacted by the English teachers in the school where this study is taken; assessment of learning, assessment for learning, and assessment as learning. Second, there were some different strategies enacted by the teachers in each type of assessments. For the assessment of learning, the strategies that were enacted were tests and portfolios. For assessment for learning, the strategies that were commonly used were open-ended questions, followed by exercises in the workbook. For assessment as learning the strategies that used were the student‟s diary and evaluation chapter. Third, the reason why the teachers used those strategies because the strategies were suitable with the student‟s characteristic and it is also to fulfill the school requirements on how to fill out the school report card. Fourth, the strategies used by the teacher to maintain their objectivity on their assessments, such as; by making their own rubric for assessing certain skills in English, use teacher‟s record for assessing the students in the class, use the content provided in the basic competencies for scoring the assessment, make multiple choices questions for the mid-term and assessment test, and do remedial and approach the students to study harder and give extra assignment for those students who got score below the score minimum completeness (KKM).
