Abstract

The study deals with teacher‟s scaffolding talks which deliver in English language form during teaching and learning process. This study aims to identify if teacher uses English as an instructional scaffolding talks and the frequency of it, and also the types of scaffolding talks that the teacher used in the EFL classroom interaction which was recorded in two meetings that naturally happen among the students and the teacher. This study took place on VIII-A class of SMPN 12 Mataram. The method used in this study is quantitative and qualitative. Moreover, observation, recording, and note taking are used to collect the data in two meetings. The data were analyzed through transcribing, coding/classifying, explanation, and the last is drawing conclusion. The data analyzed were based on the theory of types of scaffolding talks (Walqui, 2006: 170), Cameron(2001, 8-9), and Turney et al (2006) such as modeling, bridging, contextualizing, offering explanation, inviting students‟ participation, clarifying students‟ understanding, and reinforcing. The result showed the teacher applied scaffolding talks in the three steps of teaching and learning process. Those are found in pre-activity that was instruction in preparation before the learning process begin, whilst activity that was instruction in the middle of the learning process, thirdly post activity that are found in the last of the learning process. The teacher tends to speak Indonesian than English because the lack of students‟ English communicative competence. The result also showed that the teacher completely used seven types of teacher‟s scaffolding talks in balance. Altough sometimes the teacher missed to applies scaffolding talks in some ocassion
