Abstract

This study aimed to classify and explained the function of the swearing found in Ted the Movie. Ted the movie itself is an R-rating movie because of its crude and sexual content, pervasive language and some drug use. The use of pervasive language in Ted the movie which leaded to the use of swearing in that movie was the reason why this movie was chosen. The swearing in the movie then classified according to its theme and types. In order to classify the swearing in Ted the movie, this study was using Ljung’s (2011) theory of the theme and swearing of swearing. In Ljung’s theory, the theme of swearing is divided into five themes of swearing. As for the types of swearing, it cannot be separated with the function of the swearing itself, because the types of swearing were classified according to their function. The types of swearing are divided into two types of swearing they are stand-alone swearing and slot-filler swearing.This study used descriptive qualitative analysis method. This study collected the data from watching the movie and reading the subtitle of the movie, then described the swearing and classification of swearing according to its themes and types.Based on the theory provided, the data were analysed one by one to find the themes and the types of swearing, this study found six themes of swearing and twelve types of swearing that used by the characters in the movie. The theme of swearing that were found in the movie consist of religious theme, scatological theme, sex organ theme, sexual activity theme, mother theme and one additional theme. Not only that, there are also some types of swearing found in the movie which divided into expletive interjection, oath, curse, affirmation and contradiction, unfriendly suggestion, ritual-insult, and name-calling for stand-alone swearing, and adverbial/adjectival intensifier, adjective of dislike, emphasis, anaphoric use of epithets, and modal adverbial for slot-filler swearing.
