Abstract

This research was attempted to discover the improvement students’ vocabulary mastery by using immediate environment based topics for junior high school students’ grade VIII. The objective of this study was to find out whether immediate environment based topics can significantly improve students’ vocabulary or not. This research was conducted by Applying Classroom Action Research. The subject of this study was the Second Grade of MTs Putri As-syafiiyah Menggala which consisted of 32 students. The quantitative data was taken from vocabulary test as the instrument to find out the students’ score. The qualitative data was taken from field notes and observation sheet that which were used to describe the improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery. The students’ vocabulary mastery was mostly improved in every test. The range of improvement of the first test and the last test was 42%. The observation sheet and the field notes showed that the students were more attracted and active in the teaching and learning process. These finding showed that there was an improvement on the students’ vocabulary through immediate environment based topics that was supported by the result, the mean score of the first post test (67%) was better than mean score of pre test (32%), and the mean score of the second post test (74%) was better than the mean score of the first post test. This implied that using immediate environment based topics can be an alternative strategy in improving students‟ vocabulary mastery. It was suggested that immediate environment based topics to be used in teaching vocabulary especially to junior high school learners.
