Abstract

Increasing environmental awareness in Indonesia has emerged action groups that carry out conservation. This movement occurs both at the national and local levels. With the aim of conserving local values, cultural heritage and ecological issues, actors coming from NGOs and community organizations initiate joint actions. They are united in natural resource conservation action groups based on a collective identity. Using qualitative descriptive research, this one-year research (July 2018-July 2019) describes actors, forms of collective identity and problems of developing collective identity. Meanwhile, with the phenomenological approach, the researcher explores the role of the stock of knowledge, thoughts and feelings of individuals or internal aspects or individual subjectivity. This research results the findings in the form of actors, forms and issues of collective identity development. The forms of collective identity are collective solidarity and cohesion, participation incentives and provision of mobilization resources that are realized for joint action in controlling and evaluating important urban changes. Meanwhile, this action group deal with the problem of collective identity development that was found when building cohesiveness, in the form of marking each actor causing different treatments each actor and resulting in different perspectives. This phenomenon is one of characteristics of community, especially Java community. Although this group still use their collective identity in their actions, these behavior potentially eroded the identity. As a consequence, collective identity has not succeeded in transforming and changing from temporary actions into a systematic and sustainable massive environmental movement .
