Abstract

This research analyzes types of figurative language used in William Butler Yeats’ selected poems and describes the meaning and messages being contained in the sentence, clause, phrase, and word, which represent figurative language used in the selected poems. This research follows Perrine (1983) theory which divides the types of figurative language into ten types, those are metaphor, personification, simile, hyperbole, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, irony, allegory, and paradox. This research applies descriptive qualitative method to answer the formulated research questions. The subject of this research is selected poems from William Butler Yeats' collection of The Wild Swans at Coole. The result of the study indicates that there are six types of figurative language used in the selected poems. Those six types are (5) metaphors, (6) personifications, (1) hyperbole, (3) irony, and (4) simile and (2) synecdoche. These figurative languages are used to convey the author’s ideas by making readers imagine the emotions, feelings, and other elemental relationships that cannot be described in ordinary language. Each type of the figurative language found in the selected poems has a different meaning depending on the context of the poems. The message that are obtained in the selected poems are, in general, Yeats used nature in which to describes the situation he is experiencing and to describes his emotional feelings.
