Abstract

This study aims to find out the various and dominant types of speech acts on Instagram. It also focused on the implications of speech acts to other Instagram users. This study also employed a mixed quantitative-qualitative methods. The data have been collected by capturing contents including captions and comments of nine accounts on Instagram. Then, the data have been analyzed by using speech act theory of Austin (1962) and Searle (1976). Captions and comments in the forms of words, clauses, and sentence have been selected. The data were in the form of Indonesian and English. The result of data showed that types of speech acts used by students are 33,33% locutionary acts and 66,67% illocutionary acts. The dominant types of speech act is illocutionary act which could influence readers or listeners, the second one is locutionary act, and the third is perlocutionary act. Illocutionary act becomes dominant types because the students mostly intended to have interaction to other Instagram users in order to build communication. Particular speech acts caused positive feedbacks from other Instagram users. This study also recommends that were respondents or samples of the future study need to be taken into account if comprehensive results are expected.
