SPEECH ACT IN TINKER BELL (PIXIE HOLLOW GAMES) MOVIE: A PRAGMATIC STUDY

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the types of speech act and the intended meaning of illocutionary speech act in the movie called Tinker Bell Pixie Hollow. The research use a descriptive qualitative method by reading the script and collecting the data from the conversation or dialogue that consist of word, phrase, clause, and sentence indicting speech act produced by the actors and actress in the movie, then reference it by following Austin theory of speech act and its types and the principle of SPEAKING model established by Hyems. The result of the data analysis shows that there are 104 utterances indicates the three types of speech act, those are 16 locutionary act, 80 illocutionary act, and 8 perlocutionary act. Moreover, each part of factors or acronyms of SPEAKING which indicating the intended meaning of the illocutionary act were found in the data. The intended meaning of 80 illocutionary speech act found in the movie are different depends on force desired by the speaker intention while uttered the utterances. First, the intended meaning of 49 utterances which classified as Exercitives are in terms of giving an order, a command, an advice and a warn to the hearer. Second, 18 of them which classified as Expositives have an intended meaning which involves acts that clarify reason, and arguments as in denying, asking and answering. Third, 6 utterances which are classified as Verdicitives showed an intended meaning of stating a verdict that is refers to the situation in the game. Forth, 4 utterances which are classified as Behabitives have an intended meaning that refers to act in welcoming, apologizing, and thanking. Last, 3 utterances of Commissives showed an intended meaning of promising. In addition to the findings of the SPEAKING model‟s factors of illocutionary speech act in the movie, it indicates that culture of politeness is still strong in the society, which can be seen in the conversations in every scene of the movie that mostly shows a socially acceptable norm of speaking especially when the actors and actress performed act such as in denying, requesting, giving command and giving advice.
