Abstract

ix ABSTRACT This study aims to investigate the correlation between students‟ reading habits and their reading comprehension when learning narrative text in the tenth grade of senior high school in Central Lombok. The reading ability of EFL students is still low in understanding the reading text. The survey, conducted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), stated that the population of students in Indonesia lacks reading habits. This study was conducted using a quantitative method and a correlational research design. The number of samples that the researcher was taken are 72 participants at SMAN 2 Praya (urban area), MAN 1 Lombok Tengah (suburban area), and SMAN 1 Jonggat (rural area) as a representative of the tenth grade students of senior high school in Central Lombok. The quantitative method that is used, especially in the correlational study, is the product-moment coefficient correlation analysis. The index of correlation between two variables in Central Lombok was 0.004. That value of correlation index showed a significance value was lower than 0.05. It means that the alternate hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, while the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected.
