Abstract
Playing DoTA 2 is very popular among teenagers in this era, especially for Mataram University students. They outsmart it as a place to fill their free time as well as a place to learn English. However, DoTA 2 is kind of communicative game, meaning that interaction is involved. Players always play with players from other countries which make them learned some language skills. This study aims to determine the impacts and effects of playing DoTA 2 on the English skills of players and their relationship to learning the language skills they learn during play, as well as interpreting what are thier level of English after playing this game. Qualitative research is the type of research used. There were five participants involved in the study. The five participants were players who had quite a lot of experience in playing this game and had a fairly high ability to play. The instrument in this study is an in- depth interview, where the researcher asks each participant the same question in order to read the pattern of the participant's answer and proficiency test to see the player's English level. The results of this study show that there are several impacts of DoTA 2 on sutdents‟ English skill, such as, players can use English without hesitation, increased donfidence to learn English, accustomed to using English, become toxic and get used to saying bad words. The effect for the players themselves is that they get exposure to English and from the english proficiency test shows that the average level of English players is at level A2: Waystage / Elementary (Basic User).
