Abstract

This research deals with problems and strategies in teaching English writing to young learners at SDN Model Mataram. The purpose of this research were to identify and describe the problems faced and the strategies used by English teachers in teaching writing to young learners. This research is a descriptive-qualitative research. The population and sample of this research were four English teachers that were selected purposively. The data in this research were collected through observation, interview, and artefact. The data showed that there are six problems that arose in the learning process such as student’s low motivation, students easily got bored and tired, students easily got distracted, lacks of vocabulary, grammar difficulty, and student’s different level of writing. Despite of the problems, there were nine strategies that the teacher used to overcome the problems in teaching writing that are imitative writing, games and ice breaking, modelled writing, think-aloud writing, peer teaching, guided writing, individual approach, interactive learning, and cooperative writing. The study has implications on the importance of the identification of learning problems and how teachers solve the problems.
