Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe lexical hedges used by male and female students at SMAN 2 Praya exactly in grade XI. This research focused on Sasak language in their oral interaction both inside and outside the classroom. The method used in this research is descriptive-qualitative. Moreover, the data collection method that used in this study was participatory and non participatory observation. By using the framework of hedges proposed by Namasaraev (1997) and the linguistic features (Women‟s speech) by Lakoff (1975), it concluded that male and female students are different to use lexical hedges in their oral interaction. Female students tend to use more lexical hedges than male students. Male and female students used more lexical hedges of fillers such as „hmm‟, „yeah‟, „huh‟, and „like‟. They also used some linguistic features such as rising intonation on declarative and super-polite form. Female students are more careful when they talk and tend to have doubts about what will be said and what has been said. Thus, making them use more lexical hedges
