Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the types of idiomatic expression and its types of meaning in the Beauty and The Beast movie. The study used th theory by Gaines (1986) to examine the types of idiomatic expressions i.e., noun idiom, verb idiom, adjective idiom, and adverb idiom, and used the theory of Pateda (1991) to analyze the types of meaning. The data has been gathered from the Disney movie entitled Beauty and The Beast. The data was collected by doing procedures such as, downloading the movie, watching it for several times and taking notes of the possible expression which then became identified, classified, described, and analyzed. Finally, there are two conclusions in this study (1) there are 95 idiomatic expressions found in the movie, which are divided into 4 types, 12 noun idioms, 63 verb idioms, 13 adjective idioms and 7 adverb idioms. (2) types of meaning of the found idiomatic expression are categorized into four types as well, which are 26 connotative meaning, 56 conceptual meaning, 7 denotative meaning and 6 transferred meaning.
