Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out, describe, and recommend the students’ perception and experience before and after joining the English Debate Community on learning to speak during the pandemic of COVID-19. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. The sampling technique is used purposive sampling which consists of 6 students who were active in joining the debate class. In collecting the data, this study used interview. The result shows that the students felt unconfident and do not have partners to practice their English abilities before they are not joining the English Debate Community. In addition, most students gain some benefits in enhancing students’ vocabularies, confidence and abilities after they had been active in the English Debate Community. Some of the students also claimed that they like debate conducted virtually, but in the other side some of the students also uncomfortable with virtual debate classes. Therefore, most of the students give some feedback to the community to improve the teaching method and provide a curriculum of the community
