Abstract

This thesis entitled “Strategies in Improving Students‟ Reading Skill: a Study at The Second Year of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Mataram in Academic Year 2016/2017”. The study is aimed at finding out the strategies in improving students‟ reading skill. English department were the population of study, among them 36 students selected by using Purposive Random Sampling Technique (PRST) as sample of the research. To collect the data, the writer used three kinds of technique: reading test, questionnaire and interview. The participants were examined through Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire 7.0 versions as the measurement instrument to check the learning strategy preference. The data were processed and analyzed through Likert Scale and Index Formula for percentage (%) to get the most and the least strategy used by the students. The result of questionnaire show the most strategy used, were metacognitive strategy, cognitive strategy, compensation strategy, and memory strategy. For the most frequently used strategies by the students of the second year students of English department was metacognitive strategy (44%). In term of motivation the students have strong motivation in learning English. The thing that distinguished the way the students used the strategy was in the time they began to learn English.
