Abstract

This study aims at finding out the domain and functions of code switching in multilingual society of Tanjung Luar village, East Lombok. Convenience sample was used and the subjects were selected based on accessibility and proximity to the researcher. The data were obtained through: observation, recording, document and interview. The study recruited 25 informants and recorded 8.713 words in corpus. Using ethnography, the study found that code switching was found in some domains: home, neighborhood, group gathering and street talking, market, fishing activity at beach, and school. The people of Tanjung Luar switch their languages in Indonesian language, Sasak and Bajo. The study also found that code switching serves the following function: social and pragmatic function of code switching: Lack of lexical competence, expressing group identity, interjection, repetition used for clarification, intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, and quoting somebody else.
