Abstract

This study entitled “Teacher’s Characteristics and Students’ Learning Achievements in English: A Survey at The Second Year Students of SMAN 1 Praya in Academic Year 2016/2017”. This study was aimed at finding out students’ opinion about good teachers’ characteristics and to find out teachers’ characteristic from students perspective and students opinion related to the students needs, interest, and motivation in learning English. The subjects of this study were thirty (30) students at XI Bahasa in SMAN 1 Praya. The instruments used were questionnaire and interview. In questionnaire, the first step used close- ended questions to obtain information about students’ opinoin of good teachers’ characteristics which consists of twenty- eight of close- ended questions. In close- ended question, the four categories of teachers’ characteristics used. The data which was classified into 4 categories i.e., teachers’ personality, teachers’ readiness, teachers’ teaching process, and teachers’ assessment. Close ended questions were administered in the form of 2 point those were (agree) and (disagree). In order to make the students understand the questionnaire clearly, the questionnaire was written in English and Indonesian. The second step used open- ended questions to obtain information about what kind of teachers’ character are in supporting students’ achivement in learning English which consists of one open- ended question. If the respondents’ answer appeared more than 3 times it would be counted. It was also provided space for students’ reason about why they mentioned the characteristics. The last step was interviewing students by applying semi- structured interview to the respondent, in order to complete the data and to obtain further information in related with questioner about good teachers’ character. Then, the data were tabulated and analyzed qualitatively. Based on the analysis, it was found that teachers’ good characteristics were humoris (90%), good in mastery of knowledge (85%), objective in giving students score (90%) and giving motivation to students (85%). It is also found that a teacher’s character in supporting students’ achievement in english were good in mastery of knowledge and became the highest statement chosen by respondents. This characteristic was followed by teacher’s objectivity in giving students score in the second position, teacher has good preparation and organization of lessons in third position, and teacher motivates students in fourth position.
