Abstract

This research aimed to find out the common and the most dominant cohesive devices students used in their writing task. It also tried to analyze the inappropriate use of cohesive device. This study was qualitative one focusing on documentation analysis. The object of this study was all of students in which only 27 (15%) of them were taken as sample. The result of this study showed that the common cohesive devices used were references, conjunction, substitution, repetition, synonym, and antonym. The most dominant cohesive devices used were reference 438 (59.83%) followed by conjunction 249 (34.01%). It also found the inappropriate use of references such as pronouns, possessive, and also conjunctions such as additive, adversative, and temporal.
